STATUS:
We chose to send her back to Gooree Park from the sales complex for another 3-4 weeks before returning into training. This was a tactical decision. DOMINANT LADY is 8 weeks into a spell so we could have put her straight into work but we have decided to give her the full 12-week spell so she can continue to grow, strengthen and develop allowing her new trainer Jason Deamer a wonderful opportunity with a horse that any trainer dreams of having in their stables. She can be trained-up over the Spring and be ready to run early December at the start of Summer.
FACT: DOMINANT LADY was only sent to the paddock due to the passing of Gooree Park Stud’s owner Eduardo Cojuangco on 16 June. The horse had her second race start for the preparation 8 days earlier on the 8th June 20 at Warwick Fam but that was on a Heavy track over 1200m which she didn’t handle at all and also received a bad check in running. DOMINANT LADY remained in work and was being prepared for her next race when the Estate contacted the stable and advised that all their Gooree Park horses were to return to their farm to prepare for the Unreserved Disbursal Sale.
RACE OVERVIEW:
A 3yo filly with tremendous upside, DOMINANT LADY is a high-quality racing prospect that we are excited to have in our team. Considered by the Waterhouse / Bott Stable and Gooree Park to be a genuine city class filly, she was just immature as an early 2yo and is now coming to hand with all the education, money and time spent on her, she is ready to repay.
We all know she can run. A trial winner at Randwick, placed at Kembla when she was a certainty beaten, she has also run a close 4th at Rosehill on a Saturday and 5th in a Feature 2yo race whilst the only time she missed out was when she was badly hampered in the straight when travelling in 3rd spot with 150m to go at Warwick Farm on a Heavy track.
Read the form, watch the videos of her races and trials, knowing what we do, you’ll be a hard taskmaster not to be impressed about what the future holds for this 3yo filly.
Unusually for a Waterhouse / Bott youngster, DOMINANT LADY only had the one barrier trial before heading to the races. She did that at Wyong over 845m where she jumped showed good speed, led and tired the last 50m in a good hit out finishing second.
Instead of a standard second trial, the stable threw her in the deep end when she debuted at Newcastle in the $127,000 Max Lees Classic over 900m. She missed the kick ¾ length and was slow to muster speed, then zipped through to take the lead, working too hard to get to the front.
DOMINANT LADY stuck on gamely, leading to the 150m but inexperience and lack of match fitness took its toll and she ran out of gas with 100m to run and was just headed for 3rd and 4th spot.
Second-up just two weeks later, the stable again threw her into the deep end into Saturday company at Rosehill and up to an 1100m trip. Jumping away cleanly DOMINANT LADY speared straight to the front. She turned in front and led to the 250m before the swoopers arrived. She ended up in 4th spot, 1.5 lengths from the runner-up and just ½ a length from third.
Dominant Lady was sent for a spell after that but only had 4 weeks off before she was asked to return to the stable to have another go at the 2yo races.
This time through she had three barrier trials.
First trial back she won her trial at Randwick over 745m. She led throughout but two horses in the trial served it up to her and made a race out of it. Despite winning, the hard trial knocked her about a bit fitness wise.
Only 11 days later the stable put her in another trial this time over 1045m where she disputed the lead to the furlong before running out of gas. The form was franked when the winner of the heat, Bellevue Star won at Canterbury and then ran 4th in the Woodlands Stakes LR.
The stable realised that she didn’t have the right foundation and gave her a third trial.
Two weeks later they trialled her over 1045m, this time she ran third. She disputed the lead with Wild Ruler and the pair matched motors to the turn but at the 100m ran out of gas and the winner and second horse thought they were in a race and went hard to the line. That form was franked because Wild Ruler was already a Stakes Winner of the Inglis Nursery. He resumed from a spell winning first up at the Kensington track and then ran third to Rothfire in the Champagne Classic Gr2.
DOMINANT LADY was sent to the races first up from the spell at Kembla Grange over 1000m to Swift Reply who franked the form by running 3rd at Rosehill next start to the very promising Anders.
Drawing awkwardly again she was ¾ length slow into stride and then overworked to be in the leading division after the first 150m. In a high-pressure race against the boys, she couldn’t get close to the fence and she was trapped 6 deep around the turn, giving up huge ground as they straightened. She was shuffled back to 3rd last, 6 lengths off the leaders as they straightened and was entitled to drop out and run a long last. However, she dug deep and flew home the last 100m to grab third. This was an enormous effort but first up clearly took its toll.
Then the stable pushed her up in class to Warwick Farm and up 200m and onto a Heavy Track. The combination of these factors plus the hard first up run added up. However, she led to the 300m and then was just starting to feel the pinch when the horse to her inside cannoned into her and jockey Tim Clark had to stop riding costing all chances, he allowed her to just roll to the line.
Then 2 weeks later the horse was returned to the paddock at the request of the Estate.
She has spelled really well during the break and looked fantastic.
However, we are in no hurry and she didn’t have long enough in the paddock between her first and second preparations. So it’s a wise investment to give her a little longer now which will give her a wonderful foundation this time through and her new owners and new trainer will be the beneficiaries.
