When I saw this filly, I was quite taken by her with her reminding me a lot of Pure Energy who is a ½ sister to Madam Archer, the dam of this filly. I was all over Mossman in his early days but he only had very small crops of yearlings. I travelled from Melbourne to Oakwood Farm near Haigslea, west of Ipswich in late 2004 where from memory 12 of the 20 yearlings Mossman had to his credit that year were being prepared for sales.
One filly really caught my attention. She was a small filly out of the Bletchingly mare Madam Curie. As it turned out she was sold for $110,000 at the Magic Millions in 2005 and went on to run 2nd in the Golden Slipper. This was Pure Energy. She was out of my reach at the time but I always felt I should have purchased her. She was as good a filly as I have ever inspected.
This Stratum filly is very similar to Pure Energy at the same stage of her development. She is very strong and athletic. Nothing worries her. She was as calm as a cucumber at the sales which is a great sign. If they can’t handle the pressure of a yearling sale they are unlikely to have the temperament to be a successful racehorse.
She looks every bit a 2yo runner to me and I was amazed when I secured her for $38,500. She is Westspeed qualified and will stay in Perth to be trained by Dan Morton.
The filly
The photo does do this filly justice. She is a strong girl with a good hindquarter. She has a nice girth and is very attractive to the eye. She paraded very well and nothing seemed to annoy her as she was taken in and out of her box.
The filly vetted out without any issues. Her legs are very good. In fact, you couldn’t fault her conformation. I have attached a vet report to this summary. The vet who did the conformation inspection of her commented to me how correct she was.
The filly is out of a very current family with the 2019 Hobart Cup winner Eastender featuring in the family. I love current families.
Stratum
Stratum was a serious racehorse winning the Golden Slipper at two. He has been a great source of 2yo winners topping the national list in the 2009/10 Season. He is one of only a few sires to have won the Golden Slipper and sired a Golden Slipper winner. He has sired 40 stakes winners including seven Group 1 winners.
Over the years he has developed a reputation for getting outstanding fillies. Included are the Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily, Streama, Miss Wilson and Egyptian Symbol. I was lucky enough to syndicate Stratum’s first winner, Rose Of Scotland who went on to win the Tasmanian Magic Millions 2yo Classic and was a Sydney metropolitan winner when she was retired.
Stratum has an excellent record being by Redoute’s Choice out of the Luskin Star mare Bourgeois. The eight grand sires on this filly’s page are by Danzig, Canny Lad, Kaoru Star, Vain, Roberto, Danehill, Biscay and Sir Tristram. Each of these is a champion sire in his own right.
