The powerhouse combination of trainer Peter Moody and jockey Luke Nolen cast a shadow over Caulfield early on Wednesday.

Moody-trained horses ridden by Nolen claimed the opening two races with both overcoming slow starts to storm home.

Promising two-year-old Kiss A Rose, a Sebring filly, made a stumbling start but swept past the field to claim the Legatee Eric Baker Plate (1000m).

Kiss A Rose ($3.50 fav) beat home another of Sebring's offspring, Patricia Dawn ($6) by 1-3/4 lengths with Blue Palace ($6.50) third.

The latter, a daughter of Encosta De Lago, denied Sebring the trifecta with the fourth placed Apamene also by the 2008 Golden Slipper winner.

Bloodstock agent Cameron Cooke, who bought Kiss A Rose, said the win came as "a bit of a shock".

"l thought she may have been a bit forward from that alley (nine) today," Cooke said.

"She showed speed in the trial but that was really impressive. Pete thought coming into today that she was a genuine chance."

Cooke said he would talk to Moody shortly about immediate plans for Kiss A Rose.

"He's in the Hunter Valley at the moment, so I'll try to have a chat to him over the next 24 to 48 hours and decide whereto from there," Cooke said.

Nolen said the filly had taken another big step on Wednesday.

"Every time she's had a serious gallop - at home or away - she's improved off the back of each one and I think she's improved again," Nolen said.

"She stepped a little slowly...but I just let her travel and once I gave her her head she really chased the line down."

Nolen capitalised quickly in the second race, the Legatee Ron Foskett Plate (1800m) when he guided Fastnet Rock colt King Krovanh to his second win from his past three starts.

Nolen said King Krovanh, who finished third at his previous start over 1440 metres, appreciated the extra distance.

"He's definitely heading in the right direction, he's definitely more effective further out," he said.

"He's got a bit of an awkward racing style. You've got to let him find his feet so you give away any advantage you get from gate one."
