A crucial gear change and an overhaul of riding tactics has propelled talented colt Better Than Ready back to winning form.
There was nobody more relieved than trainer Kelly Schweida when Better Than Ready, the $2.10 favourite, staged a last-to-first win in Monday's Darley Australia Handicap (1110m) at Doomben.
Asked whether he ever lost faith in Better Than Ready, Schweida immediately replied: "No, not at all. The way he won that is what he's been showing us all along."
On the advice of jockey Ric McMahon, Better Than Ready was ridden quietly out of the barriers in contrast to his previous start at Doomben when he led and was run down.
"I wanted him to be more adaptable which is why we've been going forward on him but Ric said he's much better ridden behind so I decided to listen to his advice because he was pretty adamant," Schweida said.
"In the first 100 metres when he was back last with 59 kilograms on his back I was a bit worried but he showed his class.
"I think the decision to take the visor off and put a cross-over noseband on him also helped because it kept his mouth shut and he settled a lot better."
The Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 20 is an option Schweida is considering for Better Than Ready but he is leaning to keeping him in Brisbane at this stage.
"A trip away would help his development as a racehorse but I might just keep him here for another of these races in a fortnight and build on today's win," Schweida said.
"He still does a lot wrong. He can be a real knucklehead at times but the penny dropped today."
McMahon eased Better Than Ready down in the final stages to win comfortably by 2-1/4 lengths from Snipzu ($31) with Lady Colours ($5.50) a short neck away third.
