Weary's draw a barrier to Apollo chances

Thursday 12 February 2015, 4:57pm

Chris Waller will saddle up six runners in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick but fears the barrier draw might have cruelled his best chance to win it.

The leading trainer regards Expressway Stakes winner Weary as having the most attractive profile for Saturday's race - or at least, he did.

Weary has drawn out in 13, a gate Waller sees as a conundrum for a horse the stable has been teaching to settle as they aim to extend his distances this campaign.

He raced midfield on the fence and charged late in the Expressway but from a wide alley in the Apollo, Waller says jockey Tommy Berry may have to ride conservatively and for cover.

"I'm not going to be burning the candle and see him stuck outside the leader on a limb and not finishing the race off," Waller said.

However, he does concede Weary, Boban and Hawkspur will have a fitness edge over resuming stablemates He's Your Man, Foreteller and Junoob.

The opening trio have the benefit of a first-up run which counts for a lot with Waller.

"Especially the way I train. Our horses are always a bit soft (first-up)," he said.

"My horses with a 1200-metre start will be a bit more advanced than the ones starting back."

The market has Weary rated highest of Waller's team at $5.50 and equal favourite alongside Godolphin import Contributer and the Kris Lees-trained Lucia Valentina who are both resuming.

They hold sway over He's Your Man ($6.50) who will be ridden by Blake Shinn for the first time.

Shinn will bid to win the Apollo for the third time in as many years following victories aboard Appearance and Alma's Fury.
