High-profile jockey Nash Rawiller will have surgery after breaking his ankle in a mishap during a barrier trial session at Rosehill on Tuesday.
The No.1 rider for leading trainer Gai Waterhouse, Rawiller is expected to be out of the saddle for at least six weeks.
Rawiller was taken to Westmead Hospital after injuring his right ankle in the starting stalls before a trial for two-year-olds.
"He's got a broken ankle. He's going to have some surgery in the next couple of days," Rawiller's wife Sarah told AAP.
"Hopefully it's maybe six weeks out at this stage."
She said they were waiting to hear back from a specialist about the best way to heal the injury and where his surgery would take place.
Rawiller is set to miss the lucrative Magic Millions race day at the Gold Coast on January 12.
"I'd say he'll have a nice rest and be ready to go for the autumn," his wife said.
