Joao Moreira again made his mark on a flying visit to Australia with a winning double at Flemington highlighted by the $1 million Newmarket Handicap.
It was the Hong Kong premiership leader's third Group One in Australia this season, all for premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller, and his second on three-year-old colt Brazen Beau.
Moreira didn't ride Brazen Beau when he was second in the Lightning Stakes to Lankan Rupee but was back aboard for the Newmaket on Saturday and the colt delivered a performance to remember against a top field.
Brazen Beau, with 52kg on his back, defeated Chautauqua and Terravista convincingly with five-time Group One winner Lankan Rupee unplaced as he attempted to equal a modern day weight-carrying record for the race.
"We all know how tough it is to win Group One races here and I was very lucky to find this horse and stay on him the last time he won and again today," Moreira said.
Moreira first rode Brazen Beau to win a Group Two in Sydney during the spring on a day he was called on by the Waller stable to ride He's Your Man in the Epsom Handicap.
Which he also won.
Moreira is convinced Brazen Beau is capable of making his mark at Royal Ascot.
"If he brings this form anywhere he will be competitive," he said.
Waller was full of praise for the star colt.
And also the jockey.
"I see him every Sunday on my TV (riding in Hong Kong), it's like watching a replay. He just does it time and time again," Waller said of Moreira.
The hoop also won a Listed race at Flemington on Saturday aboard three-year-old filly Pittsburgh Flyer.
