Evangelist spot on for Bendigo Golden Mile

Friday 20 March 2015, 12:33pm

Tony McEvoy has a light muster on Saturday but the trainer is sure he has the right horse for the Golden Mile at Bendigo.

Evangelist is McEvoy's sole representative at Bendigo's metropolitan meeting.

And instead of going to Bendigo, McEvoy will venture to Morphettville where he has three runners.

"It's just the way it's fallen as I tipped a few horses out last week," McEvoy said of his smaller than usual team.

"I've got a few at the trial stage so I'll have a few more back to the races in the coming weeks."

An imported galloper, Evangelist won his Australian debut at Rosehill but lost form, despite finishing second in the Murray Bridge Cup.

But the trainer is confident Evangelist is back on track after an unlucky fourth behind Dylanson in the C S Hayes Cup at Morphettville.

"He didn't have a lot of luck from the 600 (metres) home and really started to build great momentum in the latter stages," McEvoy said.

"I thought we'd head to Bendigo with him and it does look a good option."

McEvoy said Evangelist had shown that he's up to at least Listed or Group Three standard and will appreciate getting out to a trip further than 1600m.

Before coming to Australia the gelding was successful over 2344m in England and his victories have been at 2000m and beyond.

"I haven't had him up to that sort of trip as yet, but we'll get him out to that distance this prep I'd say," McEvoy said.

"I think he'll go to Sydney after this run and if he shows he can still be competitive at a mile there are races like the Hawkesbury Cup and Scone Cup that could be suitable before we step him up."
