Shamalia earns shot at The Championships

Saturday 21 March 2015, 1:39pm

Hugh Bowman expects Shamalia to feature prominently during The Championships after her win at Rosehill on Saturday.

Overcoming concerns the race might not be run to her liking, connections had faith in Shamalia's ability and the mare delivered with a Group Three Birthday Card Stakes victory.

Coming from second last on the corner, Shamalia ($4.40) ran on down the outside to score a two-length win over leader Mossfun ($5) who was chasing her first success since last year's Golden Slipper.

"Mossfun was the class horse of the field but she's not racing to the level that we know she can, and I was well aware of that, but I didn't go out there to worry about her," Bowman said.

"We expected a good run from her but we were a bit concerned with the speed map.

"We didn't go out to reinvent the wheel, she is best ridden quietly.

"She did it comfortably and she has more in store over The Championships."

James Cummings confirmed Shamalia would have her next start in the Group Two Sapphire Stakes at Randwick on the second day of The Championships.

He is keen to see the mare he trains in partnership with his grandfather Bart Cummings given her chance at a feature race during the Randwick carnival after missing a spring run at Flemington due to a setback.

Mossfun's rider Tommy Berry felt his filly was entitled to find more at the finish.

"She was disappointing in the finish. She just went the same speed in the straight," Berry said.

"At the top of the straight I thought she'd blow them away."
