Permit victory could stave off retirement

Saturday 21 March 2015, 6:53pm

Veteran stayer Permit might have staved off retirement with his first win in more than a year in Saturday's Manion Cup at Rosehill.

"He's been a great horse for the stable and today was going to be his last race," trainer Chris Waller said.

"We're yet to decide whether he runs on but it will be discussed on Monday I guess when the dust settles."

Permit ($19) had been unplaced in his two most recent starts but the eight-year-old dropped in weight and stepped back up in distance to 2400m which helped him turn his form around in the Group Three race.

"He's been a terrific horse for us, he's like a stable pet and there's been talk that he'll be the stable pony when he retires," Waller said.

"So it won't be the last we see of him, but maybe he's earned another run."

On the other side of the coin, Waller said a Manion Cup win might be a good way for the import to bow out of racing.

Permit's three-quarter length win capped a memorable day for star jockey Tommy Berry.

Berry earlier won his second Golden Slipper, guiding the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vancouver to victory in the $3.5 million race.

Permit raced on speed and defeated the Bindi Cheers-trained Phrases by three-quarters of a length with half a length to Bagman third.
