Last year's Queensland Derby propelled Henry Dwyer into the Group One spotlight when Sonntag gave the trainer his first stakes win.

Dwyer is hoping he can be back in Brisbane again on Derby day this year, with three-year-old Landslide beginning a campaign at Sandown on Wednesday aimed towards a start in the race in June.

The son of Postponed won a maiden at Sale on debut in November over 1425m and resumes in a benchmark race over 1300m against his own age.

Dwyer is not expecting a first-up win but is hoping Landslide is at least hitting the line strongly before stepping up in trip.

"We didn't have him for long before he won on debut. We bought him from New Zealand, he had had two trials over there and had a full preparation over there," Dwyer said.

"He came over here, had two trials at Cranbourne and then raced about five or six weeks after getting here."

Dwyer said Landslide was a laid-back horse so it was hard to get a guide on his ability, but the trainer has put him on a Queensland Derby path.

"He was impressive enough in his first start and I think he'll get a bit further," Dwyer said.

"Those three-year-olds that are in work and racing at this time of year that are bred to get over a bit of ground, as per Sonntag last year, you can aim towards Queensland and if they measure up, they measure up. And if they don't, they don't.

"That would be the ultimate target."

Dwyer is not convinced Landslide will stay, but also noted the Queensland Derby this year was 2200m at Doomben and not 2400m at Eagle Farm.

The trainer is hoping Landslide can win a Melbourne race leading up the Derby to earn a trip north.
