The racehorse Beltrois has been put down within minutes of winning at Flemington on Saturday.
Beltrois narrowly won the Red Tempo Handicap only to stumble 50m after the line and crash to the turf.
Jockey Ryan Maloney was thrown clear in the incident and initial reports were that he escaped serious injury.
Maloney was taken to hospital complaining of pain in his left wrist.
Beltrois went to the line in a tight finish with three other horses and didn't appear to suffer any interference leading to the fall.
The horse got to its feet and was caught after going about 100m.
