Angelus, a mare who couldn't take a trick when given her chance in stakes races as a three-year-old, seems poised to deliver at that level for global powerhouse Darley.
Backed from $8 to $6.50, Angelus dominated the Inglis Handicap (2100m) at Warwick Farm on the back of a sweet ride from jockey Kerrin McEvoy.
"It's been a long time coming but she's always promised to win a race like that," Darley's head trainer Peter Snowden said.
While Angelus will retain a rating that will ensure she remains well placed under the benchmark system of racing, Snowden would like to chase a stakes event with the four-year-old.
"That's a good platform to go forward from now and a race like the Tattersalls Cup is possible," he said.
"She can still be placed competitively before she goes to Listed company but it would be nice to get a bit of black type.
According to Snowden, Angelus campaigned without luck when sent to Brisbane for the winter carnival.
"I thought a fair bit of her as a three-year-old," he said. "But everything went wrong during her preparation in Queensland.
"In the (Queensland) Oaks she drew barrier 20, it poured and she was about 15 wide for about a mile of the race.
"It was a real gut-buster but she still finished midfield."
Angelus relegated Court Connection and Brightest into the minor placings.
Brightest and the unplaced beaten favourite Lucripetous are acceptors for the Summer Cup at Rosehill on Boxing Day but trainer Chris Waller said the latter was "very, very unlikely".
