Atlantic Jewel's fate known soon

Thursday 27 December 2012, 3:28pm

Trainer Mark Kavanagh will know within two weeks whether star mare Atlantic Jewell still has a racing future.

The unbeaten four-year-old was expected to take the Melbourne spring carnival by storm but suffered a tendon injury to her foreleg in August.

She has been closely monitored and tests show improvement, but it is still not known whether she can resume her career.

"She looks pretty good to me but we'll know for sure in a few weeks when we scan her again," Kavanagh told rsn.net.au.

"That will be four months (since the injury).

"We scanned her after two months and there was certainly some fabulous healing and some great improvement there."

But Atlantic Jewel's fate rests on the second examination.

"The four month scan will come through in the next couple of weeks and we'll get a good idea of whether she's ready to come back into work or how much longer it's going to take.

"But we're a bit optimistic on how things are right now."

Kavanagh said he was prepared to take as long as necessary to bring Atlantic Jewel back to peak form if she can begin working again.

"Horses like that don't some along very often so when she's ready we'll get her going again and if she's not, she'll go to the breeding barn," he said.
