Cantonese draws wide gate in Perth Cup

Friday 28 December 2012, 12:36pm

In-form Sydney stayer Cantonese will have to overcome a wide alley if he is to add to an impressive record under trainer Bjorn Baker in the Group Two Perth Cup.

A late entry for the $500,000 race, Cantonese has barrier 19 in a final field of 20 which has four emergency runners.

In spite of the draw, Cantonese is still pressing for favouritism as the $4.80 second pick behind Chester Road and Mr Moet, who share top billing in latest markets at $4.

Cantonese earned a late Perth Cup call-up with a six-length Christmas Cup win at Rosehill.

It was Cantonese's sixth win in nine starts since an ownership change and a switch from Randwick trainer John O'Shea.

Mr Moet has drawn gate 10 but will come in three stalls if all the emergencies miss out on a start.

The Railway Stakes winner completed his Perth Cup preparation with a fast-finishing win in the C B Cox Stakes (2100m), a traditional lead-up race, last Saturday.

He defeated Chester Road with that galloper coming up with barrier 17 in Tuesday's race.

The Patinack Farm stayer Shamardashing, who will race beyond 2300m for the first time since winning the Grafton Cup in July, has gate 13 and is an $18 chance.
