A Magic Millions plunge on Aussies Love Sport appears to have come unstuck with the boom colt second to Dothraki at Canterbury on Saturday.
Backed from $151 to $9 to win the rich two-year-old race at the Gold Coast, Aussies Love Sport has earned just $16,750 and would need a higher than normal attrition rate to make the Magic Millions Classic field.
Dothraki might help the cause with trainer Gerald Ryan cautious about his prospects, saying the colt probably needed to win by more than the short neck he had over the runner-up in the ATC Membership on Sale Now Plate (1200m) to convince him he is worthy of a start.
"I don't know if he's good enough for the Gold Coast," Ryan said.
"I'll let him tell us over the next week or so. I'll have to analyse the race and the times.
"He was three lengths clear at the top of the straight and if he had held that margin I would be more inclined.
"This is his first preparation and he might be at the end of his tether."
Dothraki was tightened from $41 to $12 for the Magic Millions while Aussies Love Sport eased to $26 with Wyong Magic Millions winner Assail and Clevadude, successful at Moonee Valley on Saturday, equal $3.80 favourites.
Aussies Love Sport's trainer Gai Waterhouse said he was now likely to embark on a Golden Slipper preparation.
"He hasn't got enough prize money so we'll concentrate on winning the Slipper," she said.
"I have always thought he was a Slipper horse.
"If he gets into the Magic Millions we'll go but it doesn't look as if he will."
Dothraki finished fifth as favourite in the Wyong event, a race Ryan said was a strong form line.
"Assail is very fast, very nippy and it was a strong race," he said.
"I watched Clevadude but it's hard to get a line on him. There was not a lot of pressure on him.
"But Rick Hore-Lacy trains him so that's a plus."
