Glyn Schofield will start the new year on top of the Sydney jockeys' premiership after keeping his nose in front with a winning double at Canterbury on Saturday.
Schofield ends 2012 with a 2-1/2-win lead over reigning champion Hugh Bowman after victories on two-year-old Dothraki and the Chris Waller-trained Caesar's Princess at the final metropolitan meeting of the year.
Schofield is yet to win a Sydney premiership and would love to still be ahead when the season ends on July 31.
"Obviously I think we all start the season off hoping to win a premiership," Schofield said.
"There's still a long way to go but I'd rather be where I am now than not."
Schofield has 31 winners with Bowman second (28.5) and Corey Brown and Nash Rawiller (26) third but Rawiller is out with a broken ankle.
Schofield's day didn't start out well at Canterbury when he was beaten on odds-on favourite Lilliburlero in the opening race.
His decision to get into a bumping duel with another runner in the back straight drew the scrutiny of chief steward Ray Murrihy who believed it had been detrimental to the filly's chances.
"We say you erred in riding in that manner," Murrihy said.
Schofield bounced straight back with victory on the Gerald Ryan-trained Dothraki, whose performance in the 2013 ATC Membership On Sale Now Plate (1200m) to beat boom colt Aussies Love Sport went some way to justifying the jockey's opinion of the colt.
Dothraki is eligible for the Magic Millions Classic in two weeks at the Gold Coast but trainer Gerald Ryan was non-committal after the race.
Schofield said Dothraki, who was beaten out of a place in the Wyong Magic Millions on debut last week, had plenty of ability.
"He was nice today and that was probably a bit more like what we were expecting last week at Wyong," Schofield said.
"The high-pressure race at Wyong was just a bit much for him. He was a bit better presented today in his manners but he's still got a lot to learn mentally.
"Physically and as far as ability goes, I don't believe he's far behind any two-year-old if he's behind any at all."
Caesar's Princess gave her rivals something to chase in the Schweppes Handicap (1550m) and despite tiring late she held on to win by three-quarters of a length.
Schofield was one of three riders to bag a winning double.
Blake Shinn scored on track specialist Cathay Lady and Testarhythm while Tommy Berry ended the meeting with a race-to-race double on Travolta and Mighty Obvious.
Schofield starts the new year with six rides at Rosehill on Tuesday including Shadows In The Sun in the Listed Tattersall's Club Cup (2000m).
