Imported stayer Award Season didn't let punters down at Warwick Farm on Saturday as he backed up a country-class win with a successful introduction to city racing in Sydney.
The Kris Lees-trained stayer firmed from $4.60 to $3.30 late before going on win the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (2400m) in good style by 1-1/2 lengths.
Award Season was bought out of Europe by Australian Bloodstock and had finished just a length behind this year's early Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune in a race in France in 2011.
Lees used a Muswellbrook race last start to try to boost the stayer's confidence and he showed improvement again as he settled back in the field on Saturday before working into the race from the 600m mark.
He swept home down the outside and was too good for Flying Home ($6) with Agent Bauer ($26) 1-1/2 lengths away third.
Lees said the five-year-old took time to acclimatise after arriving in Australia early last year but was improving all the time.
"It was only a Muswellbrook win last time but he put them away pretty well and I'm pretty pleased with how he went today," he said.
Winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy was expecting a good showing after watching Award Season's Muswellbrook win and said the manner in which the gelding continues to improve would decide how far he gets.
"If he keeps improving he might be up to a better race than a normal Saturday race," McEvoy said.
"He's got a nice attitude and gave me a nice enough feel there today."
