Black Caviar not as fat as first thought

Champion sprinter Black Caviar remains on track to resume in next month's Lightning Stakes with trainer Peter Moody dismissing fears over her fitness.

A newspaper report on Thursday cast doubt over her readiness to return amid concerns her weight had ballooned by 70kg during her spell.

However, connections have been quick to refine that figure to around 30kg and Moody has no qualms she will be ready for her proposed first-up assignment at Flemington on February 16.

"We'll get it off pretty quick so there's no concerns," trainer Peter Moody told Sky Racing.

"It's great to see people interested in her and she's a big girl, she's allowed to put on a little bit."

Black Caviar is back in work at Moody's Caulfield stables having not raced since she pulled up sore from her Royal Ascot victory in June.

Moody has been cautious about her comeback, stressing she will only race again if he is satisfied she is back to her best.

So far, so good.

He also confirmed next month's Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) - which has been renamed the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes in her honour - was her first-up target.

"Very pleased, looking forward to the Lightning on the 16th of February," Moody said.

In the interim, Black Caviar will have a jump-out at Caulfield with Moody also slating the possibility of an exhibition gallop at her home track to get her up to the mark.

He nominated Australia Day or February 2 as the most likely dates for a public workout.

"I just want to see a smile on the face, for her to tell me she still wants to be there and then I'll have a chat to the owners ... and then we'll head on towards the Lightning," he said.

Moody also confirmed Queensland Derby winner Brambles had suffered a tendon injury and would miss the autumn.

It is the second successive carnival blow for the promising stayer who missed the spring after failing to recover from a bout of travel sickness.

"He galloped nicely at Caulfield on Tuesday morning but he's pulled up with swelling to a tendon," Moody said.

"We haven't seen him since the Queensland Derby and unfortunately it looks like he'll be out until at least the spring again at this early stage."
