Matignon back on track for Rosehill race

Thursday 10 January 2013, 4:10pm

Matignon has bounced back well from a bout of colic and trainer Guy Walter is looking for the mare to get her campaign back on track at Rosehill on Saturday.

She was an easy first-up winner at Goulburn and Walter was upbeat about her chances in a Warwick Farm race last Saturday but had to scratch her only hours before the event.

"About nine o'clock last Saturday morning she had a mild attack of colic," Walter said.

"I don't really know what caused it but she got over it in a matter of hours and has been in great health since and worked really strongly on Tuesday."

Matignon will take aim in the Cloudy Bay Sprint (1100m) for which she is the $3.20 favourite.

Walter hopes this preparation is the one where Matignon translates her potential into racetrack performance.

The daughter of Lonhro won on debut as a two-year-old at Randwick but was winless in her next seven starts.

Her first-up 5-1/4 length class two win at Goulburn was indicative the Darley-owned galloper had come back stronger this time in.

"She showed a lot of promise early and then really didn't live up to it after that," Walter said.

"I think that she's a much stronger mare now and I'm hoping that she can live up to the promise she showed early."

Walter was disappointed Matignon had to miss the 1200m race on her home track last week as he felt it was an ideal second-up assignment.

"But in saying that Saturday's race is an attractive race too," the trainer said.

Walter has two runners in the final race on the card and believes Hardbreak Hotel can run a good race fresh over 1200 metres.

He won first-up at Warwick Farm in August before his form tapered off.

"He won brilliantly first-up last time and whether that flattened him I don't know, but he was a little disappointing in his subsequent runs," Walter said.

"He's been going along really nicely. He didn't have a long time off and he's had a trial and a lot of fast work so I think he's fit enough for Saturday. I expect him to run a good race."
