Berry after Magic Millions three-peat

The Magic Millions Classic has helped shape the career of Tommy Berry who has his sights on a record third straight win in the $2 million event.

The Gold Coast juvenile feature put the then apprentice on the map two years ago when he rode flying filly Karuta Queen to an all-the-way victory.

Berry's talents soon caught the eye of Gai Waterhouse who added him to her stable and it was aboard her filly Driefontein that he made it back-to-back wins in dramatic circumstances last year.

Driefontein won the Classic on protest after stablemate No Looking Back was first past the post.

No jockey has won the Magic Millions Classic three years in a row but Berry hopes to change that on Saturday.

"I think it (the Magic Millions Classic) has definitely kicked off my career," Berry said.

"Karuta Queen more than likely got me the job at Gai's, and Driefontein really showed Gai that I was good enough to be there and really boosted my confidence.

"They are two horses that have played a massive part in my career but I won't get as easy a run from the barrier this year."

Berry will ride the Waterhouse-trained Certitude in the 1200m race with his chances suffering a blow when the filly drew gate 19.

Certitude was a debut winner at Rosehill before finishing fourth in the Wyong Magic Millions at her second start.

"She'll definitely go forward. I think you've got to in a Magic Millions," Berry said.

"It's definitely not a good thing drawing out there but it's not the end of the world either.

"She's got pretty good gate speed and I think with blinkers on it will switch her on.

"I've got (second favourite) Clevadude drawn to my inside and it will do most of the work to get me across. But where I'll get from there, I'll have to wait and see."

Berry has only ridden in Queensland three times and has returned successful on each occasion.

"I've been up twice for the Magic Millions meeting and the other was when I rode four winners at Doomben two weeks before the Magic Millions last year," Berry said.

Certitude is an $18 chance in the Classic while Berry's Magic Millions Guineas mount Driefontein is on the second line of betting.
