Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller's decision to shorten Moriarty's races reaped another reward on Thursday when the gelding stormed home to win the Listed Gosford Gold Cup.
Waller tried to get the English import to stay earlier in the summer but after he failed in the Christmas Cup (2400m) the trainer decided to drop him back in distance.
Moriarty won the Tattersalls Club Cup (2000m) at Rosehill on New Year's Day and backed it up with another impressive performance at Gosford over 2100 metres to take the Cup by half a length from Reuben Percival with Winning Glory 1-1/4 lengths away third.
Sydney's leading jockey Hugh Bowman had Moriarty back in the field during the run but produced him with one sweeping run on the outside and his turn of foot powered him to victory.
"It was a good win and he deserved it," Bowman said.
"He's been racing consistently and broke through last start and I'm just lucky to pick up the ride today with Corey Brown out.
"I was told to hold him up for one run and that's what I did."
Waller was on the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions Yearling Sales and stable foreman Peter Muscutt said Moriarty would likely have a break now after an arduous campaign.
"He's probably done enough now but we'll just see how he comes through," Muscutt said.
"He's come a long way this preparation and the drop back in distance in his past couple of starts has done the trick.
"He probably doesn't quite see out the mile and a half (2400m). It just blunts that turn of foot that he does have, but over this type of distance he can show that turn of foot."
For the first time the Gosford Gold Cup meeting also featured the running of the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) and the Listed Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).
The Belle Of The Turf was taken out by Cathay Lady, who fought back to beat Babel.
Winning jockey Blake Shinn was stood down after the race after he fainted in the stewards room and required medical attention.
He was replaced by Brenton Avdulla on Testarhythm, who went on to win the Takeover Target Stakes.
