Ferment wins for Patinack and Berry

Saturday 12 January 2013, 6:50pm

Nathan Berry will take a short break from racing on a high after steering three-year-old Ferment to victory over older horses at Rosehill on Saturday.

The John Thompson-trained gelding came down the outside to wear down the leaders and beat Southern Skye by a neck with Havana Rey another nose third in the tab.com.au Handicap (1500m).

Berry and his girlfriend Whitney Schofield leave on Sunday for South Africa where the first leg of their trip will be a safari outside of Durban.

Schofield, the daughter of jockey Glyn Schofield, is returning home for the first time in several years.

"Whitney hasn't been home for five years," Berry said.

"We leave tomorrow and the first thing we are doing is a three-day safari near Durban which is Whitney's home town.

"After the safari we will spend four days in Durban and five days in Cape Town.

"I'm really looking forward to it."

Ferment has now won two races in two weeks and took his record to four wins from 11 starts for Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm.

"It was a big effort against the older horses," Berry said.

"He had to dig deep and that makes it even better."

Berry has spent the past couple of years in the shadow of his twin brother Tommy who is a stable rider for Gai Waterhouse.

Tommy has won three Group One races this season but Nathan's opportunities have been restricted due to a series of careless riding suspensions.

During a couple of his forced outings, Berry has travelled to David Hayes' country Victorian property to ride work and cement a relationship with the trainer who also has stables in Sydney.
