Finding rhythm in running will provide a key ingredient to Whooska registering his maiden win at Nowra on Friday.
The Robert Price-trained four-year-old suffers from a common equine problem - a soft pallet - similar to the Bart Cummings and later Aiden O'Brien-trained champion So You Think.
Whooska lines up in the Terry Harvey Carpet Court Maiden (1200m) with Patrick Murphy in the saddle.
The gelding by Planchet out of Rushcutter, part-owned and bred by Price's horse breaker Graham Edwards, wears a tongue-tie and nose roll to help overcome the problem.
"We tried a few different things with tongue-ties etc and he's settling much better now," Price said.
"He's a horse you can't dig up out of the barriers nor drag him back early.
"The key is to try and get him into his rhythm where he's comfortable."
Price had Whooska as a two-year-old but the gelding was frail and weak early in his career and failed at his only juvenile start.
He then spent time with the Lee brothers at Randwick but after showing speed in his two trials, a decision was made to send him to the paddock to grow and strengthen.
Whooska spent 481-days away from racing, almost forgotten, the break doing the gelding the world of good.
"He just needed to grow into himself," Price said.
Whooska resumed with a ninth to Merciless in a 1200m maiden at Nowra on August 26 when ridden forward and fading.
Last start, after a plan to ride him back, Whooska motored home despite racing three-wide to go under by a nose to Rossarita in a maiden at the same track on September 17.
"I had him in a weak maiden at Moruya after his first run back. He would have been a certainty but got balloted out," Price said.
"Last start we tried to ride him a bit quieter, he settled better but didn't have a lot of luck in running.
"There has been noted improvement since then.
"He'll be hard to beat Friday."
