Damien Oliver has had his first ride on his Caulfield Cup mount Snow Sky in a work-out at Werribee.

Oliver went to the quarantine centre on Sunday morning to partner the Sir Michael Stoute-trained English stayer in a gallop before the Caulfield Cup.

Snow Sky is the equal topweight for Saturday's race with 58kg and is an $18 chance in early markets behind $4.60 favourite Mongolian Khan.

Oliver said Snow Sky was a lovely horse and was relaxed in his 1400m-gallop.

"His fitness is great and his recovery was quick after the gallop and it's all systems go going into next week," Oliver said.

"They said he came here a pretty fit racehorse and they haven't had to do too much with him.

"It was nice to get a feel of him, just open his wind up a little bit down the running.

"He's a lovely horse to ride and seems uncomplicated."

The champion jockey said Snow Sky came onto his radar following his victory in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Oliver was at the meeting to partner Wandjina and was taken with Snow Sky's win in what he described as a high quality race.

He said Snow Sky's experience travelling to Hong Kong last December had helped the five-year-old cope with the trip to Australia.

Snow Sky didn't handle the Hong Kong environment but is relaxed and seems to have acclimatised well in Australia.

Oliver, who has also been booked for the Melbourne Cup ride, says Snow Sky is an athletic horse with a versatile racing style.

"I think he's the right sort of horse to bring out here, particularly for Caulfield which can be a bit of a tricky track for the Europeans," Oliver said.

"His form shows that he's a really good mile-and-a-half horse in Europe, but that equates to being a good two mile horse here.

"I think either race will suit him as well as the other.

"I'd be happy to win either one of them."
