Mullins pleased with Max Dynamite progress

Tuesday 13 October 2015, 4:14pm

Premier Irish jumps trainer Willie Mullins has made a flying visit to Australia to inspect Max Dynamite, his Melbourne Cup hope which is expected to be ridden by Frankie Dettori.

Dettori will ride at the Breeders' Cup meeting in Kentucky on October 31.

"I know he has commitments in the Breeders' Cup but he should be able to make it out here, so I'll be happy enough for that," Mullins said.

Mullins flew into Melbourne to watch Max Dynamite gallop at Werribee on Tuesday morning before returning to Ireland to prepare his large team of jumpers for the upcoming season.

Max Dynamite arrived in Australia on September 26 to prepare specifically for the Melbourne Cup.

Mullins has made one trip to Australia previously with Simenon finishing fourth behind Fiorente in the 2013 Melbourne Cup after running fourth in the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield.

This time Mullins has elected to go straight into the Melbourne Cup without a start.

Max Dynamite hasn't raced since winning the Lonsdale Cup (3300m) at York on August 21, following a second placing in a hurdle race in Ireland in July.

"I was very happy with his work this morning and I wish the race was this week," Mullins said.

"I think he's fit and well and I thought he worked better than I was hoping he would work.

"He's had plenty of runs before he came out and I didn't think he needed a run.

"This morning confirmed that."

Mullins said he took a lot out of Simenon's fourth placing in the Melbourne Cup and was putting lessons from that experience into practice.

"What we learnt on our previous trip here is coming into play, but come the first Tuesday in November if it is a complete failure then we'll have to review what we are doing now," he said.
