Fame Game firms after Caulfield Cup draw

Japanese stayer Fame Game has shortened in the betting for the Caulfield Cup after drawing the inside barrier.

But Mongolian Khan remains a clear top pick for Saturday's $3.15m race over 2400m.

Mongolian Khan firmed into favouritism for the Cup after finishing behind Criterion in the Caulfield Stakes last Saturday but eased slightly after drawing nine and is now the $4.80 favourite.

Fame Game, to be ridden by Hong Kong jockey Zac Purton, firmed from $10 to $9 after drawing barrier one that had his trainer Yoshitada Munakata offering a big smile.

Fellow Japanese galloper Hokko Brave didn't fare so well in the draw coming up with barrier 19 and eased out to $14 after being $11 before the draw.

Set Square shares the second line of betting with Hauraki and Fame Game at $9 but has drawn out in barrier 16.

Trainer Ciaron Maher was hoping for a draw closer to the rail but said barrier 16 was no big deal.

Last year's VRC Oaks winner will start from barrier 12 if the emergencies don't gain a start.

"It's a staying race so you have to get your horse into a nice rhythm and relaxed," Maher said.

"That's the first and foremost thing and then you can ride a race from there on in."

Chris Gibbs, who co-trains New Zealand visitor Volkstok'n'barrell, said he could not have wished for a better barrier.

"He'll come into barrier seven if the emergencies don't get a start and if I could pick a barrier that is the one I would have chosen," Gibbs said.

Robin Trevor-Jones, overseeing the preparation of Trip To Paris for trainer Ed Dunlop, said barrier five was an ideal draw.

"It's a great barrier. We jump, sit and let him hold his position. Hopefully we'll be just in behind the leaders," Trevor-Jones said.
