Jameka gives Maher second shot at Oaks win

Saturday 24 October 2015, 5:18pm

Jameka is on target to provide Ciaron Maher with consecutive VRC Oaks wins after scoring impressively at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Set Square won the three-year-old fillies classic for Maher last year and Jameka is on target for the $1 million race after taking out the Group Two Vase.

A well backed equal $4.40 equal favourite, Jameka ran down the leader Shards ($10) to score by a length with Tarzino ($4.60) three quarters of a length away third.

Maher said Jameka would head straight to the Oaks on November 5 without another start, bypassing the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington next week.

"There's no temptation," Maher said.

"This was nicer timing for her."

Jameka won the Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington before a spell and her spring campaign has been aimed at Oaks.

Maher said Jameka was a similar filly to Set Square at the same stage of their careers.

"We haven't put a lot of emphasis on her early races," Maher said.

"She improved from her last start into the (Thousand) Guineas and looked better again today to be peaking in a bit over a week's time."

Racing Victoria stewards quizzed Craig Newitt over his ride on Victoria Derby favourite Tarzino after settling at the tail of the field.

Newitt told stewards he rode the colt quietly because he fought the three-year-old for most of the race in the Caulfield Guineas at his previous outing.

"As long as he was ridden for today and not for the 2500-metre race," chief steward Terry Bailey told Newitt.
