Schweida opts for Millions over Melb G3

The lure of record prize money on Magic Millions day has prompted Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida to bypass a Group Three race in Melbourne with Miss Cover Girl.

The Magic Millions on January 9 will be Australia's richest race day with $10 million spread over nine races.

Because the races are restricted to Magic Millions sales graduates with a couple of wild card qualifying races, they do not have Group status but some do have Restricted Listed standing including the $2 million Magic Millions Classic and the Guineas.

A Group Three winner of the PJ Bell Stakes at Randwick in autumn, Miss Cover Girl returned to Sydney two weeks ago to run third in The Nivison and Schweida had intended to take her to Melbourne for the Group Three Hong Kong Club Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

"But we had a good think about it and you can't go to the well too often," Schweida said.

"It came down to a choice of Melbourne or heading home for the Millions carnival."

"We have a couple of options at the Millions and the prize money is far greater than Melbourne."

"So we brought Miss Cover Girl home and she will tackle a couple of fillies and mares in December before pressing on to the Gold Coast."

Fellow Brisbane trainer Barry Baldwin is also looking to the Gold Coast meeting with Shadow Lawn, a first-up winner at Doomben on Saturday.

"She is still learning and wanted to throw her head around in the straight," Baldwin said.

"But she is very promising and we will aim her towards the Magic Millions Guineas in January."

"I have no doubt she will run a strong 1400 metres in the Guineas."
