Clipperton halfway to weight loss goal

Sunday 25 October 2015, 12:48pm

Sam Clipperton's quest to strip five kilograms from his lithe frame is on track as he prepares for the light-weight mount on Stay With Me in the Myer Classic at Flemington.

The Sydney jockey was given two weeks to get down to 49kg and was almost halfway towards that goal when he rode at Randwick on Saturday.

Clipperton said he had been concentrating his exercise regime on walking and swimming and was on a strict diet until race day.

"I've cut out all sugar, salt and carbs," Clipperton said.

"I'm a bit of a sweet tooth so cutting out sugar is always hard."

It's not the first time Clipperton has ridden light in a Group One race.

He got down to 50kg to partner Sweynesse in the Doncaster Mile off a month's notice and said achieving a similar result in half the time was an easier task.

"I got to 50kg in four weeks for the Doncaster and found it left a lot of room for temptation," Clipperton said.

"So two weeks is good, I can just cut it all out."

Stay With Me is a daughter of multiple Group One winner Miss Finland and earned a start in the Group One race on Saturday with her victory in the Thousand Guineas earlier this month.

The filly represents Clipperton's first ride for trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig since the duo formed a training partnership.

It will also be the jockey's first taste of spring carnival racing in Melbourne.

The 21-year-old was barely out of his apprenticeship at the corresponding time 12 months ago but this year finds himself with three Group One rides on one of the biggest days on the racing calendar.

Clipperton has also been booked to ride last-start Spring Champion Stakes placegetter Man Of Choice for trainer Luke Price in the Victoria Derby and either Magic Hurricane or Contributer for Godolphin in the Mackinnon Stakes.

"It's a great opportunity and I'm very grateful," he said.

"It's good to be going to Melbourne on the biggest day with three leading hopes in Group Ones."

Clipperton will arrive in Melbourne on Friday and plans to walk the Flemington track ahead of the Derby day program.
