English trainer Ed Dunlop has arrived in Australia to oversee the Melbourne Cup lead-up of Red Cadeaux and Trip To Paris.

Dunlop flew in on Tuesday and headed straight to the Werribee quarantine centre to inspect the two horses, one of which is running for the first time and the other for the fifth and possibly last time.

Red Cadeaux has endeared himself to the Australian public, running second in the Cup three times.

"I need to talk to (owner) Ronnie Arculli but this may be his last run, but I've said that the last three years in a row," Dunlop said.

"We'll wait and see what happens next week and take it from there.

"I can't imagine there would be too many other international horses that run in five Melbourne Cups.

"We've still got to get him there and the fundamental credit goes to the owner, the horse and my staff.

"Without them we wouldn't be here and it's an incredible thought just to be running him."

The trainer said he had learned a lot in recent years, particularly how to run second with Red Cadeaux also runner-up in Sydney's richest race, the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April.

Trip To Paris also began his Australian visit with a second place finish to Mognolian Khan in the Caulfield Cup.

But Dunlop can't believe the price difference between his two with Trip To Paris the $7.50 Cup second favourite and Red Cadeaux a $26 chance.

"It surprises me what a long price Red Cadeaux is," Dunlop said.

"I know he never wins but he normally runs pretty well and if the boys are right he'll run well again."

Dunlop said he could not have predicted how Trip To Paris would run in the Caulfield Cup as he had never travelled before and went into the race without a lead-up run.

Despite his Ascot Gold Cup success over 4023m in June, Dunlop knew Trip To Paris also had the speed to be competitive over shorter as he showed to win over 1400m as a two-year-old and 2400m earlier this season.

He said Trip To Paris and stablemate Manndawi, third in the Geelong Cup last week, had taken a few days to get used to the new surrounds, but have since blossomed.

Gerald Mosse will ride Red Cadeaux at 55kg while Tommy Berry will again be aboard Trip To Paris.
