Fame Game camp says Cup favourite on song

Tuesday 27 October 2015, 5:29pm

In a scary thought for the opponents of Fame Game, the Melbourne Cup favourite has improved following his Australian debut at Caulfield.

Fame Game ran sixth in the Caulfield Cup on October 17 in a run that caught the attention of Racing Victoria stewards who grilled jockey Zac Purton and trainer Yoshitada Munakata after the race.

While Purton hasn't been on his back since and the trainer returned to Japan, Munakata's assistant Masato Tamaya, who also acts as trackrider, has been putting the stayer through his paces.

Speaking through interpreter Kosi Kawakami, Tamaya explained Fame Game came through the Caulfield Cup in excellent shape and feels he is in better order.

"The best thing I know is his action," Tamaya said.

"Usually he gets a bit stiff and tired after the race but he wasn't even tired after the Caulfield Cup run.

"His action is really nice and smooth."

Tamaya and the Fame Game team was surprised with the inquiry into the run at Caulfield and he said the stayer would be ridden in a similar manner next Tuesday.

"If he is midfield, he goes through the field," Tamaya said.

"That's how he races. He's not a sweeper."

Fame Game is the $3.80 favourite for the Melbourne Cup, a quote that surprises Tamaya.

"We are surprised at the odds but at the same time the odds have nothing to do with the racing," Tamaya said.

"We have to leave it up to the jockey and the horse at the end of the day."

Tamaya hasn't been paying attention to the foreign raiders in quarantine but noted Max Dynamite has been getting a lot of miles into his legs.
