Fontelina aims for more Flemington success

Wednesday 28 October 2015, 12:23pm

Ageless sprinter Fontelina has been bouncing around like a two-year-old since reaching Melbourne on a history-making mission.

Fontelina is being aimed at winning the Group Two 1200m race for Flemington on Saturday.

The gelding was trained by Anthony Cummings when he won the race in 2012 and 2013.

Fontelina is now being trained by Tony Gollan who has several horses for owners Michael Buys and Rob Wills.

Gollan took Fontelina to Sydney where he was set the task of earning another Flemington appearance by performing well in the City Tattersall's Club Lightning (1100m) at Randwick.

"He ran fifth but with more luck he would have nearly won. If you look at the head on he got blocked and then had to go through a narrow gap," Gollan said.

Gollan has had Fontelina since he finished unplaced in the Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben.

"Obviously this is the first campaign I have had him but he really seems to like Flemington and we do know he can race well up the straight," he said.

Gollan is hopeful Fontelina has finally shaken off the impact of an injury that stalled his career.

Top jockey Damien Oliver has taken the ride on Fontelina which has drawn barrier 12.

"No one knows the straight better than Damien and he will give Fontelina every chance," Gollan said.
