Derby Day Group Ones in Currie's sights

It's been 12 years since Luke Currie's lone Australian Group One win but the jockey is hoping to snap that drought on Derby Day at Flemington.

Currie rides the Ciaron Maher-trained stablemates Azkadellia in Saturday's Myer Classic (1600m) and Set Square in the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).

Roman Arch's Toorak Handicap win in 2003 is Currie's only success at Australian racing's top level.

"It's been too long since the last one, so it would be fantastic," Currie said.

"It's nice just to go to the races on any day with a couple of chances. To be in Group One races is even better."

Currie was suspended for last weekend's Cox Plate meeting when Azkadellia finished strongly to be denied in a photo finish.

He rode Azkadellia in a first-up Ballarat win in September and again two starts later when she won convincingly at Cranbourne.

"She's drawn ideally in barrier six. She'll probably be back a little bit and needs a bit of speed on, but Flemington should suit and I think she'll run really well," Currie said.

Currie said Azkadellia's performance at Moonee Valley proved she deserved a shot at the Myer Classic.

Azkadellia is on the third line of betting at $7.50 behind Thousand Guineas winner Stay With Me ($4.40) and class mare Royal Descent ($5.50).

Currie's only race ride on Set Square was in the Group One Turnbull Stakes two starts ago over the Mackinnon Stakes course.

The mare finished third, less than a length from the winner Preferment.

"Coming back in distance, I suppose, is a little bit of a concern but off her Turnbull Stakes run, if she has the right run she should be thereabouts as well."
