Trainer Mick Price doesn't want to cry should Tarzino finally give him a coveted Victoria Derby win.

There will be some tears among Tarzino's syndicate of owners, perhaps from Price as well, if the $2.35 favourite wins the $1.5 million race.

The prominent Caulfield trainer has made eight attempts to win the Derby over the last 12 years although he predicts a victory on Saturday will be more emotional for the connections who include his wife Caroline.

"If he did win there would be a few tears, hopefully not from the trainer," Price said.

"I don't want to cry but once she was there when I won the Australian Cup and the Caulfield trainers do remind me how much I cried and it's not pretty."

The syndicate recently knocked back a big offer - more than $1 million - from Hong Kong for the colt but there are a number of emotional reasons not to sell particularly for part-owner Melissa Jurie.

"The Hong Kong offer had to be 100 per cent or nothing and there's a bit of emotion to it," Price said.

"One of the ladies bought it for her husband while he was suffering cancer and she promised him a Group winner of some type and he's since passed away, so she won't sell her bit and you've got to respect that."

Tarzino winning the Derby would be very emotional for Jurie, Price said.

"For her it would be like `up in heaven', you know what I mean," he said, raising his hand to the sky.

While Price concentrates on his job as trainer, the owners do enter his mind.

"I always think of owners. When I lost the Blue Diamond I thought of the owners because I have other chances to win Blue Diamonds. I have other chances to win Derbys but for people who aren't sheikhs or with endless sums of money they don't get a lot of chances.

"It's a peak point in their life to achieve something that's very difficult to achieve."

Price, whose best Derby result was second in 2003 with Kempinsky, believes barrier 10 will prove ideal for New Zealand-bred Tarzino.

"I think he's in the right spot."

Price paid $60,000 for New Zealand-bred Tarzino at the 2014 Magic Millions yearling sale.

He isn't getting ahead of himself despite having one of the shortest priced Derby favourites.

"I do own 15 per cent myself. I haven't calculated the win because that's a bit going the early crow but it would be a fantastic achievement."

A Derby win would also be welcomed by the rest of the Price family.

"It would mean I would have a nice night because wifey owns five per cent, so there's a bit of pressure there," he said, laughing.

"She's all of a sudden gained this great interest in the game."
