Francesca Cumani enjoys Group One victory

Saturday 31 October 2015, 5:00pm

Francesca Cumani is extremely excited about her first win as a racehorse owner, albeit with a small stake in Mackinnon Stakes winner Gailo Chop.

The horse racing personality and TV presenter has a "very small piece" among the French horse's syndicate of owners.

"You'd think I own the whole horse the way I'm carrying on," Cumani said after the $1 million Group One win.

"But that's the beauty of ownership. It doesn't really matter how much you've got, a win's a win and for it to be in a race like the Mackinnon is so good."

The Gailo Chop investment is the first for Cumani, whose father Luca Cumani is an English trainer.

Gailo Chop was one of three international invitees in last Saturday's $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley but the race didn't go to plan and he finished eighth, 12 lengths from the winner Winx.

"We were quite hopeful going into the Cox Plate and then we were a bit deflated afterwards just because nothing really went right," Cumani said.

"He's a horse that really likes a lot of clear running room and we saw (jockey) Ben Melham take him to the front and let him roll at his own pace. That was the key.

"For him to come back after being headed by Rising Romance was a great performance.

"He's a real toughie and a real sweetie so I'm thrilled."
