The Flemington track for Melbourne Cup day has been upgraded, but jockeys say the best ground remains closest to the inside rail.
The track was upgraded following the running of the fourth race, won by Malaguerra who led throughout.
Horses racing on the fence were at an advantage on Saturday and that was the case again in the early races on Tuesday.
Craig Williams, a noted walker of tracks before and during meetings, finished 11th behind Malaguerra on Lordag after racing midfield.
"There's places where you want to be and places where you don't want to be," Williams said.
Hugh Bowman, who finished second aboard Good Project, said the track was harder than it was for the Victoria Derby meeting.
"It's a bit firmer than it was on Saturday but it does appear to be having the same bias," he said.
The rail on Melbourne Cup day was moved out 2m from its rails position on Saturday.
