Payne's Cup win great moment: Cassidy

Thursday 5 November 2015, 2:07pm

Retiring jockey Jim Cassidy says seeing Michelle Payne win the Melbourne Cup is one of the greatest moments in his time in racing.

The 52-year-old will retire without adding to his 104 Group One wins with the scratching of his VRC Oaks mount Dawnie Perfect.

"I've seen one of the greatest things happen in my career on Tuesday, seeing Michelle Payne win the Cup," Cassidy said.

"It was probably one of the most touching moments of my life to see a lady rider come out and win one of our greatest races throughout the world."

Cassidy walked through a guard of honour formed by his fellow jockeys before a special presentation to mark his retirement.

The champion jockey is riding competitively for the final time at Flemington on Thursday after announcing his decision last week.
