Spatsizi auditions for autumn Derby role

Chris Waller didn't have a three-year-old make it to the Victoria Derby, but the chances of him having a major say in the ATC Australian Derby look more than promising.

Waller made a late call not to chase the Derby with Spring Champion Stakes winner Vanbrugh, preferring to save the colt for the autumn where he could joined on the blue-riband Classic trail by Spatsizi.

Spatsizi made it two wins from as many starts this spring when he led in a Waller-trained trifecta in the Schweppes Handicap at Canterbury on Saturday.

"I'm not saying he is a Derby horse yet, but if he keeps winning then we'd at least look at the lead-up races," Waller's racing manager Liam Prior said.

"And then there's always the option of the Queensland Derby, depending on how far we go with him this time in."

Waller had three of the six runners in Saturday's race and it was the outsider but best-backed of the trio which finished the strongest with Spatsizi ($9) chiming in at the 200m before holding off Torgersen ($7) to win by a half head.

Feast For Eyes, who eased from $2.60 to $4.60, held down the minor placing after leading and looking the winner a long way into the straight.

"He has lots of scope but for moment it's all about picking up prize money and wins," Prior said.

Spatsizi's win gave Lester Grace wins in two of the first three races.

"Lester got on this horse as a pick-up ride at Hawkesbury and we were happy to leave him on," Prior said.

Moreton's Fork won't be the best two-year-old among the hundreds Godolphin will try this season but there is a place for him in the famous stable.

"He's just a real workhorse. He's nothing brilliant," Godolphin spokesman Brad Widdup said after Moreton's Fork won the TAB More Than Winning Plate.

Race experience told the story as Moreton's Fork, an easing favourite at $2.80, lifted when claimed by Babooshka ($8.50) to win by a long head.

"I don't know how comfortable he was in the ground so it was a good win," Widdup said.

"He's had the race under his belt so there was probably the benefit there."

Moreton's Fork's jockey Sam Clipperton said he was resigned to finishing second.

"(The runner-up) definitely drew level and looked like it was definitely going to go past me," Clipperton said.

"And that's why I was impressed with the way my bloke really knuckled down and showed a will to win."
