Architect win a perfect tonic for Lawlor

David Lawlor appreciates better than most the therapeutic benefits of training winners.

Lawlor is fighting the battle of his life against pancreatic cancer and only returned to training racehorses three weeks ago.

Captain Fastbuck gave Lawlor a much-needed boost when he won at Ipswich on January 18 and Architect added to his tally with a brave victory in the Hot 91.1 Handicap (1800m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

"I was out for six months but I deserved to have a holiday because I got pancreatic cancer pretty bad," Lawlor said.

"It's stationary at the moment and hasn't got any bigger which is good and getting winners certainly helps."

Lawlor plans to gave Architect a spell before setting him for the Group One J J Atkins (1600m), which was formerly run as the T J Smith, at Eagle Farm in June.

"Once he learns to gallop he'll be a good horse and I think I'll take the blinkers off him because he pulled a bit hard today," he said.

Because of Architect's extravagant action, jockey Jim Byrne was intent of giving the gelding plenty of galloping room.

"The key with him is to just keep him out of trouble," he said.

"He's too big and too clumsy to be trying to ride him the perfect race and really, he was better than those other horses."

Byrne believes Architect's gait might improve as he gains more experience.

"It was probably more pronounced today because of the heavy track but he'll be alright once he learns what it's all about," he said.

Earlier, Brian Smith said he intends to extend the campaign of Dolly Dolly after her dominant win in the GBT Plate (1800m).

"There's a Class Six Plate in three weeks time at Doomben where she'll get in good at the weights so she'll be going around again," Smith said.

Jockey Jeff Lloyd was confident Dolly Dolly had her rivals covered when she was travelling comfortably in the testing conditions.
