Compromise reached on Qld racing bonuses

Tuesday 9 February 2016, 5:16pm

Racing Queensland has announced changes to its breeders' bonus system for next season while keeping the major components of the multi-million dollar scheme.

Breeders, trainers and owners have been lobbying for RQ not to make cuts to the Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme that has been the backbone of the state's racing industry in recent times.

The scheme provides various bonus payments to Queensland-bred horses who win or are placed in selected races.

RQ consulted within the industry as part of its Tracking Towards Sustainability Plan.

As a result, QTIS bonuses on two-year-old and three-year-old racing will remain at current levels and the 6 per cent breeders' bonus will also remain in place.

However, QTIS bonuses on black-type events and races for four-year-olds will be discontinued.

RQ's acting chief executive Ian Hall said the amendments had the full support of the breeders, owners and the trainers.

"It's pleasing that Racing Queensland has been able to retain the elements of QTIS that breeders, owners and trainers view as being most beneficial and being able to reduce expenditure as is necessary under the current circumstances," he said.

Queensland Thoroughbred Breeders Association president Basil Nolan said it was a major win for the state's racing and breeding industry.

"I think everyone will benefit from the retention of QTIS in its present form, as every participant in the racing industry benefits from a scheme like this," he said.
