More tests for Signoff after recent trial

Monday 15 February 2016, 3:18pm

The results of tests on high quality stayer Signoff will determine the immediate racing future of the gelding.

Signoff, fourth in the 2014 Melbourne Cup, is one of a group of horses returning erratic results to Ibuprofen months after being treated with the anti-inflammatory drug at a Victorian property as part of his therapy for a tendon injury.

His owners have not started Signoff since he returned a positive test after winning the Lord Stakes at Caulfield in December.

Trainer Darren Weir has continued to have Signoff tested and took him to Cranbourne for two barrier trials on Friday.

"We took an elective test and hopefully we'll have a result back by Wednesday," Weir said.

"Then we'll decide whether we accept for Friday night.

"He's had four negatives in a row and this will be the fifth one so then I've just got to work out whether to roll the dice or not."

A negative from his latest test could meant Signoff contests the Torney Night Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night as a lead-up to the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville on March 14.

Last week the Racing Victoria Integrity Board delivered submissions to the RV Board to uphold the rules of racing giving no leeway to the affected horses, meaning it is the trainers responsibility to present the horse to race with no banned substances in its system.
