Jameka starts Derby campaign at Flemington

Wednesday 17 February 2016, 3:16pm

Oaks-winning filly Jameka kicks off a campaign at Flemington that connections hope will lead to ATC Australian Derby success.

Winner of the VRC Oaks, Jameka returns to racing in The Vanity over 1400m on Saturday.

Trainer Ciaron Maher is setting the filly for the ATC Australian Derby at Randwick during The Championships.

Jameka will head to Sydney after she runs in the Australian Guineas at Flemington on March 5.

Her performance in that race will determine whether she presses ahead to the Rosehill Guineas on March 19 or reverts to fillies grade.

A gallop on Saturday morning on the Caulfield course proper and an easier hit-out on Tuesday has Jameka ready for her first-up run.

"Her recovery was good, her action is great and I'm very happy with her," Maher said.

Jameka has been posted as a $3.80 second favourite for The Vanity with the unbeaten Perth filly Perfect Reflection, now with Darren Weir, the $2.60 favourite.

Joining Jameka at Flemington on Saturday is Bon Aurum who heads to the CS Hayes Stakes over 1400m.

Bon Aurum is second-up after finishing ninth in the Manfred Stakes at Caulfield on February 6.

The colt is being prepared for a shot at the Australian Guineas after which he will be spelled for a spring campaign as Maher says he dislikes wet ground.

"I thought he was good first-up," Maher said.

"He was always going to be soft after having surgery after his last campaign.

"He's taken a lot of improvement out of his first-up run and will get further improvement out of this one as well."

Bon Aurum is a $14 chance in early markets posted on the CS Hayes Stakes.
