An inquiry into the defeat of the Bjorn Baker-trained stayer Mr Steal has been finalised with racing stewards taking no action.

Mr Steal was beaten as a drifting favourite at Canterbury earlier this month, prompting an inquiry into the riding tactics used by Hugh Bowman.

A natural frontrunner who had led at his previous two starts, Mr Steal found himself racing midfield at one stage during the 2700m race which was won by the Chris Waller-trained Springbok Flyer.

The inquiry heard Baker had given specific instructions for apprentice James Innes to lead on Mr Steal at Randwick on January 23 but had allowed Bowman the option not to go to the front.

Stewards continued the inquiry on Wednesday and found nothing wrong with betting patterns on the race but they said Baker should have told them about a possible changes in tactics.
