Bart's Saintly Place takes centre stage

Saturday 20 February 2016, 1:15pm

The name Saintly Place will live on in with an area opposite the Flemington winning post dedicated to the Hall of Fame trainer Bart Cummings's Melbourne stables.

Saintly Place stabled an array of Cummings champions at the back of Flemington racecourse, but it is now home to apartments.

Cummings won 83 Group One races, including 12 Melbourne Cups at Flemington.

Before his death last year Cummings was aware of plans to develop the racetrack space and Victoria Racing Club chairman Michael Burn said the racing industry had worked with his family to decide on how best to display some of his racing memorabilia.

"Bart has bequeathed a stunning array of his racing memorabilia which includes his 12 Melbourne Cup trophies," Burn said.

Cummings's son Anthony said it was an honour for the family to have an area named after Saintly Place.

"I think Dad would call it a re-opening," he said.

"We think it is an appropriate place for a lot of Dad's trophies and the public honours that he received along the way for his efforts in thoroughbred racing to be on display here."

The VRC also made a presentation to Red Cadeaux's travelling valets Robin Trevor-Jones and Steve Nicholson.

They were given a painting of the three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up as well as a mounted set of racing plates.

A plaque has been laid in the pre-parade ring at Flemington near the stall Red Cadeaux where was housed for his five Melbourne Cup attempts.

Red Cadeaux was euthananised after breaking down in last year's Melbourne Cup.

His ashes will be placed under the plaque.
