Mamma shows fight in winning The Vanity

Saturday 20 February 2016, 3:40pm

Tony McEvoy favours heading straight to Sydney with Don't Doubt Mamma the filly scored a narrow first-up win at Flemington.

Options for Don't Doubt Mamma include staying in Melbourne for the Australian Guineas or the Frances Tressady Stakes at Flemington or going to Rosehill for the Coolmore Classic in Sydney.

Don't Doubt Mamma returned from a successful spring campaign with a hard-fought win against quality fillies in The Vanity on Saturday.

McEvoy said the Australian Guineas on March 5 was tempting but he would let the filly do the talking.

The Coolmore Classic at 1500m is run on March 12.

"To ask her to do that again in a fortnight is probably too much to ask," McEvoy said.

"That would be my gut feeling on the day as I think three weeks to the Coolmore is a nicer fit.

"It's a really nice race for her."

Ridden by Dwayne Dunn, Don't Doubt Mamma ($7) scored by a head over the fast finishing Egypt ($21) with the favourite Perfect Reflection three quarters of a length away third.

McEvoy said he was second guessing himself after seeing the strength of nominations for Saturday's race.

"I was running her in those shorter races last time as at home she was showing me more speed than she was at the races," he said.

"She really excited me today and to come out and beat those fillies as fresh as she is, there's lot to look forward to."

Perth filly Perfect Reflection was a drifter from $2.30 to $3 before suffering the first defeat of her career.

Perfect Reflection had won her first five starts in Perth before transferring to Darren Weir.
