Winx odds-on for Chipping Norton

Monday 22 February 2016, 6:12pm

Bookmakers are taking no chances with Winx in her first Group One race since the Cox Plate with the mare odds-on to extend her winning record.

She has not been beaten since the ATC Australian Oaks last April when she was toppled by Gust Of Wind, one of her opponents in Saturday's Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

Winx started at $1.60 when she cruised to victory in the Group Two Apollo Stakes last Saturday week and is at $1.50 for the Chipping Norton.

Since Tie The Knot won his first of four successive Chipping Nortons in 1999 at $1.90, three other odds-on favourites have won with Lonhro at $1.26 in 2003, Grand Armee $1.90 in 2005 and Tuesday Joy $1.90 in 2009.

Trainer Chris Waller also entered the mare in the Group Two Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) on Saturday.

"She will start in the Chipping Norton with Amicus to run in the Guy Walter," Waller said.

There were 15 entries taken on Monday for Sydney's first Group One race of the new year with Godolphin's Hartnell and Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan equal $8.50 second favourites in the TAB's first markets.

Godolphin trainer John O'Shea, who won the race last year with Contributer, has also nominated Hauraki and Group One Metropolitan winner Magic Hurricane with English jockey William Buick booked for the latter.

Buick, who is currently riding in Dubai, rode in Sydney last autumn, winning the Group Two Pago Pago Stakes on Tarquin.

"I feel it's a great privilege to be asked to go down to ride for Godolphin again in Australia, even if it is only for a weekend here or a couple of days there," Buick said in a Godolphin release.

"It is one of the major attractions of riding for a stable with such a fantastic global set-up.

"As a jockey, I find Australian racing sharpens you up a bit."
