Currie considers options for Honey Toast

The lure of winning his home-town Toowoomba Cup could sway trainer Ben Currie to miss next month's Adelaide Cup with smart stayer Honey Toast.

Starting a warm $2.20 favourite, Honey Toast maintained his unbeaten record at a distance past 2000m when he won the Sapphire Recruitment Handicap (2200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Honey Toast looked in trouble when tackled by Cramming ($3.50) at the 300m mark but fought on to too well to beat Ranked ($8.50) by 1-1/2 lengths.

Cramming tired to be third a further neck back.

Currie has entered Honey Toast for the Adelaide Cup (3200m) on March 14 but is tempted to stay home and set the gelding for the Toowoomba Cup (2200m) on April 16.

"Honey Toast has shown he can travel when we took him to Townsville and he won the Cup there. But it is a long way to Adelaide and it will cost a bit to get there," Currie said.

"We will have to make up our mind in the next few days but the other option is the Toowoomba Cup. He can have a few days on the water walker and then come back for a 1600-metre race and into the Cup.

"I have always wanted to win the Toowoomba Cup being a Toowoomba boy."

Jockey Jim Byrne said Honey Toast appeared genuine stayer who always found something when challenged.

"He had plenty of weight with 59 kilos today so it was a good run," he said.
