Canberra gelding Appoint Percy has taken out the latest instalment of the Highway series, his win putting him in contention for a Brisbane winter carnival tilt.
While the four-year-old scored on a good track at Randwick on Saturday, trainer Luke Pepper said he would be even better on rain-affected ground.
For that reason he is looking to campaign Appoint Percy during the winter months and hasn't ruled out taking him north for a low-grade stakes race.
"With The Championships coming up here the Sydney racing is very tough," Pepper said.
"I think he'll be a real effective horse over the winter and he might find his way up to Brisbane.
"He can probably pick off something in Listed company if it's wet."
A last-start city placegetter, Appoint Percy was well supported to start a $2.10 favourite.
Jockey Brenton Avdulla had pre-race concerns about the wide gate but they were quickly allayed when the horse jumped well and put himself in the race.
Stalking the speed, Appoint Percy asserted his authority in the straight, overcoming his greenness to score by three lengths from Warken ($21) with Destined To Win ($12) a half neck away third.
