I'm Belucci on song for Rosehill Guineas

Sunday 28 February 2016, 2:47pm

I'm Belucci's effort to finish fourth at Doomben carrying a big weight from a bad barrier has been enough for his trainer to declare him ready for his trip to Sydney.

I'm Belucci came from the outside gate in the field of 15 and carried 59kg in Saturday's 3YO Hcp (1600m).

Desleigh Forster and jockey Michael Cahill both confirmed he was on song to be competitive in the Group One Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 19.

All going well, the Spring Champion Stakes runner-up will then head to the Australian Derby (2400m) on April 2.

"That was exactly what we wanted from him. I'm Belucci had to go a mile back to get anywhere near the fence and then had to circle the field," Forster said.

"To make up so much ground in the short Doomben straight was ideal. At this stage we are off to Sydney."

The usually reserved Cahill was enthusiastic about I'm Belucci.

"He really is looking for 2000 metres now. That was a good effort," Cahill said.

The vastly experienced Cahill is in line for the I'm Belucci ride in the Rosehill Guineas but Forster is yet to confirm a jockey.

Fellow trainer Toby Edmonds will step the winner Mr Epic up to 1800 metres for his next start in two weeks at the Gold Coast.

"That was his second win over 1600 metres and both times he had to do it the hard way," Edmonds said.

"On his breeding you wouldn't think he would be a stayer but I will put him in that 1800 metre race and we will get a better idea."

If Mr Epic shows he can get over ground, Edmonds will look at some of the distance races for three-year-olds in the winter.
